Premier League: Mahrez brace sets up Manchester City’s dominating win over Cardiff City
After having stunned to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Lyon in their Champions League opener, Manchester City bounced back in great fashion with a 5-0 rout of Cardiff City on Saturday.
Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez scored his first two goal for the English Premier League defending champions as Pep Guardiola’s side shrugged off any signs of complacency that might have creeped into their game during that shocking result at the hands of Lyon.
On the other hand, it was nothing less than a nightmare for Cardiff who conceded a three-goal lead even before the half-time whistle blew.
In the second half, it was a scintillating brace from club record signing Riyad Mahrez whose 67th and 89th minute strikes capped off a dominant return to form for the Citizens.
This win propelled them to the second spot in the league table, behind Liverpool, who have won all six of their Premier League games so far with their 3-0 win over Southampton.
Said Guardiola, “We were more dynamic. After not a good result in midweek [against Lyon], we responded again to the same level that we had in the past 12 or 13 months.
“We made a good performance, but after one or two goals, it was easy. At 0-3, you are relaxed and we were consistent. We didn’t suffer too much and created a good game.”
Aguero celebrated his contract extension with the club with a strike in the 32nd minute that gave City the lead which was then doubled by Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva three minutes later..
German Mideo Illkay Gundogan netted in the 44th minute for City after which some Mahrez madter-class in the 67th and 89th minutes.
