At the very beginning of the film, makers have made it clear that Mamangam is not totally based on history and certain cinematic liberties have been taken. As the film begins, without investing much time, M. Padmakumar takes us directly to the story of chaverukal, the suicide squads, who try to kill the Zamorin king so that they can reclaim what is theirs.
The warriors who pledges to kill the Zamorin ruler, who belongs to the Chandroth family of Valluvanadu. Chandroth Valiya Panicker (played by Mammootty) is extremely close to achieving his and the entire village’s dream.
However, he fails to make it true. Decades later, the two living sons of the Chandroth family (played by Unni Mukundan and Master Achuthan) have been assigned a task of killing the Zamorin ruler during the next Mamangam festival. Notably, the festival comes once in 12 years.
Both Mammootty and Master Achuthan maintain their feeling despite having a lot of complaints throughout the film. The banter between the two is among the few highlights of Mamangam.
The film is regarded as one of the expensive Malayalam films. When you watch the film, you can see the swords wielded by the warriors not event touching the rival person. But, you will see a lot of blood all over the person who gets wounded.
The film does not have so much dialogues of Unni Mukundan. While, Siddique and Prachi Tehlan have also been given limited screen presence and their performances don’t have the kind of impact people expected.
Mamangam is a film which is surely a must watch, if you are a fan of Mammootty.
