Three men and two women have succumbed to the Delta Plus variant of the SARS-CoV2 virus. All five, including a 63-year-old woman from Mumbai, were senior citizens and suffered from comorbidities. The health department added that 66 people have been found infected with the Delta Plus variant in Maharashtra so far. Some of them are fully vaccinated.
The 63-year-old fully vaccinated woman from Mumbai died because of the infection in the last week of July. Following the woman’s death, at least two of her close contacts were also found infected with the Delta Plus variant, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.
As of now, 13 cases of the Delta Plus variant have been reported from Jalgaon. Ratnagiri has reported 12cases while Mumbai has 11. Pune and Thane have reported six each. Palghar reported three and Raigad too the same. Gondia and Nanded have 2 cases of the Delta Variant. One each is reported from Chandrapur, Akola, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Kolhapur and Beed districts. Of the 66 patients down with the Delta Plus variant of the virus, seven were aged under 18.
One new case of the Delta Plus variant was detected in Thane. The Thane resident is a 50-year-old woman who had mild symptoms. Health officials say that she has recovered.
The COVID-19 Delta Plus variant is considered highly infectious. It was detected during genome sequencing of swab samples sent from different parts of the state.
State health authorities have intensified the efforts to trace Delta plus variant patients.
