Maha Shivratri is one of the most popular Hindu religious festivals. It is celebrated annually in honor of the god Shiva and is celebrated over three or ten days based on the Hindu lunisolar calendar. On this day, people fast for the entire day and then pour water or milk on the Shiva Lingam and also offer sweets, fruits, and garlands.
Shivaratri is the convergence of Shiva and Shakti- the masculine and feminine energies which balance the world. Lord Shiva is known by several names, some of them are Mahadeva, Pashupati, Bhairava, Vishwanath, Bhole Nath, Shambhu, and Shankar. Unlike, other Indian festivals, this is a more majestic affair, marked with central reflection and introspection.
Maha Shivratri, this year will be celebrated on March 11. The Chaturdashi tithi will begin at 02.39 pm on March 11 and end at 03.02 pm on March 12. Given below are things that one must avoid on this auspicious occasion.
Maha Shivratri: 7 things to AVOID
- Do not wear BLACK as it is not advisable for Mahashivaratri poojas.
- Coconut water should not be offered to Lord Shiva during Shivaratri.
- Ketki and Kevada flower should be avoided as it is said that flower is despised by Lord Shiva.
- Women should avoid applying vermilion on Lord Shiva. Instead, they should use Sandalwood paste.
- One must never offer Tulsi (holy basil) to Lord Shiva as it is a symbol for Goddess Laxmi, wife of Vishnu.
- Milk should never be offered from a bronze container to Lord Shiva. It should always be offered in a copper vessel.
- One should never complete one full circle around the Shiva Lingam but should be a semi-circle and then return to the started point.
