Paris Saint-Germain’s perfect Ligue 1 run came to a halt at Bordeaux, where the defending champions were held to a 2-2 draw putting an end to longest winning run at the start of a season on Europe’s top five leagues.
Held, but still unbeaten the result did little to affect the French champions, who sit atop the table with 43 points from 15 matches. The next best team Montpellier are in 29 points, 14 away from PSG, while Bordeaux after their fifth draw in 15 games are at the 11th position.
Goals from Neymar and Kylian Mbappe gave PSG the lead twice in the match but Bordeaux bounced back on both the occasions to halt the league leaders’ winning run of 14 games.
PSG started well and could have scored early when Angel Di Maria struck the woodwork and Neymar had a goal ruled out for offside. The Brazilian also was denied a penalty in the 25th minute when he was tripped inside the box by a home team defender but referee refuted all claims.
Despite their dominance in the opening 45 minutes, all PSG had to show was a VAR assisted goal at half-time. Neymar’s effort from a Dani Alves low-cross in the 34th minute was verified by VAR for a possible Mbappe offside and the goal stood, giving PSG a 1-0 lead.
But Bordeaux came all guns blazing in the second half and levelled the scores just eight minutes into the contest. Jimmy Briand placed his shot to the right of PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from a Yann Karamoh cut-back to Younousse Sankhare after the French winger had beaten the opposition backline with a surging run. The goal was the 33-year-old’s third goal of the season.
Mbappe then put PSG back on the lead five minutes later, finishing off a Julian Draxler through ball to notch his 12th goal of the season.
But with six minutes remaining Andreas Cornelius headed home the second goal from a perfect Maxime Poundje cross to bring PSG’s record-run to a halt.
