Nation today recalls our second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 114th birth anniversary.
India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was ‘Man of Peace’ who strived to achieve peaceful India through peaceful means. The core of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ was carved by Lal Bahadur Shastri, who always valued these Bravehearts.
Lal Bahadur Shastri headed the country during a challenging time and his leadership and thoughts on various key issues like freedom, war and governance continue to be prevalent even today. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the first person to be posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was a revolutionary thinker made monumental contributions to India’s independence movement. Born on October 2, 1904, Lal Bahadur Shastri joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s and was strongly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his flow of thoughts. He served in the office from 1964 to 1966. He headed India during the 1965 Indo-Pak War and his famous slogan at the time, ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ still remains popular. Lal Bahadur Shastri died on January 10, 1966, and his sudden death was said to be because of a heart attack.
After being a Satyagrahi for a long time he joined independent India’s government under Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru and succeeded him as Prime Minister on June 9, 1964.
