Exclusive: Kolkata Nagerbazar blast happened because of an IED, says Bomb squad
The Nagerbazar area of the city of Kolkata witnessed a bomb blast on Tuesday morning at around 9 am that left many injured and an eight-year old dead.
A member of the bomb squad confirmed to The Live Mirror that the blast was a result of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) which is used in case of landmines.
Generally, a bomb blast is carried out either by an inflammable substance (in case of religious or celebratory festivals) or by throwing-both of which clearly isn’t the case here.
The blast here took place because of a bomb that was self-explosive, due to the presence of an IED. The IED operates on the basis of a circuit which is either completed by a flashgun which are mostly used by terrorists or a detonator and in some cases, a timer.
Barrackpore Police Commisioner Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that a socket was used in this explosion. A socket is nothing but a container where the bomb is kept and reports state that this was the first IED explosion in Kolkata.
It operated in the mechanism of a socket and had particles of ammonia nitrate in it, which when heated to certain extent, becomes an explosive. Also, a splinter was used in this case, which leads the bomb particles to shoot out here and there and injure people. That’s why it is commonly said to lie to down when there’s an explosion as it nullifies the impact of the splinter.
This led of the death of the child named Bibhash Ghosh. Aged 8, his height was within the radar of the splinter in the bomb and the boy, being close to the point of explosion was the immediate victim, with a reported injury to his head.
