The flights operating from Cochin International Airport has been suspended and approximately 10,000 families have been moved to safety, following new rain alert during the last 24 hours.
Nearly 4,000 families were relocated to safer places last night in preparation for the release of water from Mullaiperiyar dam. Water has been released from the dam through all its 13 shutters at the rate of 2200 cusecs a second. The water from the Cheruthoni dam is been released at the rate of 8.5 lakh liters a second.
Fishing vessel rescue, four crew member saved by the Navy
In a rescue operation by Navel helicopter, four locals were rescued from a fishing vessel, Anugraha, which began sinking 12 nautical miles northwest of Alappuzha earlier. The search operation for other four crew members is still carried on.
A Dornier aircraft is also involved in the operation, said Naval authorities.
The rescued crew, Suresh, Sivan, Babu and Alby, are from Vypeen, Kochi
‘Red Alert’ is been declared in many states
The Met department has issued ‘Red Alert’ for Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, Palakkad, Idukki and Ernakulam districts till Thursday, August 16.
Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts are already on ‘Red alert.’
The Met Department has also issued an ‘Orange Alert’ (heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places) for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam Districts till Thursday.
The death toll has reached 45 in the floods.
