Kerala is bearing the brunt of heavy rainfall that has led to floods and landslides. More than 20 people have been killed in floods. There are fears the death toll could rise further as many people are missing. Several houses were washed away and people became trapped in the district of Kottayam in Kerala state.
Kottayam and Idukki are two of the worst affected districts in the state. A heartwrenching visual showed a house on the banks of the Manimala river being washed away in the floods. The incident took place in Mundakayam of Kottayam district in Kerala. Thousands of people have been evacuated and more than 100 relief camps have been set up across the state.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a high-level meeting to intensify the rescue efforts. He has also requested the people to be extra cautious and shift to safer places. The Army, Navy and Air Force have also stepped in to help the civil administration. The National Disaster Response Force has decided to deploy 11 teams to help the people.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a flash flood warning in at least five Kerala districts and a yellow alert for heavy rain in eleven districts.
Kerala regularly experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon months from late May to September. However, flash flooding and landslides have become more frequent in recent years.
