Kargil Vijay Diwas: Prime Minister Narendra Modi says valour of India armed forces continues to inspire generations
The country is observing the 21st anniversary of the successful ‘Operation Vijay’. It marks the victory of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the mountains of Kargil on July 26, 1999. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too paid a tribute to the martyrs who died during the Kargil War.
“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, we remember the courage and determination of our armed forces, who steadfastly protected our nation in 1999. Their valour continues to inspire generations,” PM Modi tweeted.
“Will speak more about this during today’s #MannKiBaat, which begins shortly,” he added with hashtag CourageInKargil.

Defense minister Rajnath Singh and home minister Amit Shah were among several leaders who also paid their tributes to fallen soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas.

India launched Operation Vijay to clear the posts in the high-altitude Kargil sector, which was occupied by the Pakistani soldiers on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC). On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of “Operation Vijay”. They declared victory after the nearly three-month-long battles in the icy heights of Kargil. The country lost more than 500 soldiers in the war.
