Boyz N the Hood director John Singleton passes away at 51
Oscar nominated director who directed the movie Boyz N the Hood passed away
Hollywood director, John Singleton who made his debut as a director with Boyz N the Hood has passed away. He was 51 at the time of death.
As per the report of the news agency, AP, Singleton’s family said that John died in Los Angeles, and he was with his family and friends. Earlier this month, the director had a major stroke on April 17.
Singleton was in his early 20s when he was just out of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, and then he wrote, directed and produced Boyz N the Hood. Based on Singleton’s upbringing and shot in his old neighborhood, the low-budget production starred Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube and centered on three friends in South Central Los Angeles, where college aspirations competed with the pressures of gang life. Boyz N the Hood received critical acclamations and was a commercial hit.
It was given a 20-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and praised as a groundbreaking extension of rap to the big screen, a realistic and compassionate take on race, class, peer pressure and family. Singleton would later call it a “rap album on film.”
He was the first black to receive Oscar nomination for his film and he was the youngest of all to receive the nomination.
On his death, many peers of him from the industry mourned the death of the director.
Here are a few tweets and Instagram posts.
There aren’t many of us out here doing this. It’s a small tribe in the grand scheme of things. He was a giant among us. Kind. Committed. And immensely talented. His films broke ground. His films mattered. He will be missed. And long remembered. Thank you, John. #RunIntoHisArms pic.twitter.com/wKfOaCGFuA
