A 26-year-old Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student on Friday allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. Rishi Joshua, a 2nd year MA student, e-mailed a purported suicide note to his English professor before hanging himself, in the library. The details of the note has not been shared.
Rishi belonged to Kerala and was a resident at the university’s hostel. He informed his professor through an e-mail about the extreme step. The professor soon contacted the warden of Mahi Mandvi hostel, where Rishi Joshua resided.
The police were informed about the incident around 11.30 am by the warden of Mahi Mandvi hostel, where Rishi Joshua resided. The man further informed officer-in-charge of the hostel where he stayed. After they failed to find him in the hostel room, the office in-charge informed the police.
AS reported by HT Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Devendra Arya said, “A PCR call was received around 12 p.m. at Vasant Kunj North police station regarding the email. A team immediately reached the campus. One room in the basement of the library building was locked from inside and there was no response on knocking the door. From the window, we could see a body hanging from the ceiling fan. The door was forcibly opened and the body was taken down by cutting the cable.
Arya further added that JNU doctors were called and they declared him dead. The crime team of South West district visited the spot and necessary investigation was done. The body has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for post-mortem. The student’s relatives have been informed. As per preliminary enquiry no foul play is suspected.
