Japan Earthquake: rocked by magnitude 6.6, burries homes under landslides
After being hit by a strong typhoon Jebe, now a powerful earthquake has rocked the city of Sapporo in Northern Japan. This magnitude 6.6 earthquakes hit the Japanese Island of Hokkaido on early Thursday claimed one life.
The magnitude 6.6 earthquake brought down several buses, triggered a landslide, and killing one and missing over 30 people. This powerful earthquake struck 39 miles southeast of the regional capital Sapporo. While Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning of a slight sea level changes in the coastal areas resulting earthquake.
According to the Japanese media, “An 82-year-old man died after falling down the stairs at his home during the quake.” At least four landslides were reported after the quake, government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said, adding that six homes had collapsed in the earthquake so far.
The government has also urged its citizen in areas hit by strong tremors to concentrate information on television and radio and act by helping each other and not to go to in dangerous areas. As the footage of earthquake was aired on television people started coming out of their houses following the earthquake.
‘The government will work in unison towards reconstruction while giving the top priority to saving human lives,’ Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters.
The earthquake comes hours after eleven people were killed, thousands left without power and thousands left stranded after a fierce typhoon lashed the country, leaving people in a chaotic situation.
