On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, Govindas across are gearing up for Dahi Handi. All eyes will be on Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sairnaik’s event in Maharashtra’s Thane.
Every year, Sairnaik under the banner of Sanskruti Yuva Pratishthan organises Dahi Handi. Teams across Mumbai and Thane get invitations to participate in this event.
Organiser Purvesh Sairnaik was quoted in India Today saying, “This year, we are going to celebrate the Dahi Handi festival in the first half of the day. And in the second half, we have organised Dahi Handi Pro which is a sport when all the big teams of Thane and Mumbai will come. We have taken all security measures so that no Govinda will get hurt while celebrating the festival or playing sports. We have safety mats, safety jackets and a medical team at the venue. This year, our event has got recognition of sports from Maharashtra government’s sports departmen
The Dahi Handi coordination committee has decided that mandals which have demonstrated their ability to form more than six tiers will only be permitted to take part in the professional competition wherein children below 14 years of age will not be allowed to take part.
In Mumbai’s Dadar and Walkeshwar area, Dahi Handi will be celebrated tomorrow in a very traditional way. At Walkeshwar’s Banganga, special Dahi Handi has been organised to salute the Indian soldiers, where the boy on the top tier will be in a soldier’s uniform.
