With Jammu and Kashmir being divided into two separate Union Territories, Radio Kashmir was renamed to All India Radio/Akashvani. The radio stations in Srinagar, Kashmir and Leh were also renamed to AIR Jammu, AIR Srinagar and AIR Leh respectively.
Radio Kashmir Jammu was available in Dogri, Urdu & Hindi while Radio Kashmir Srinagar got Kashmiri, Urdu & Hindi.The radio station was established on 1st July 1948. JN Zutshi became the first director general of Radio Kashmir. Their broadcasting station is located in Srinagar.
In 1953, AIR undertook Radio Kashmir to counter radio Azad Kashmir.
The Parliament passed the legislation to bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two UTs in the first week of August. This took place within days of the Union government abrogating Article 370 of the Constitution that granted special status to J&K.
While the new Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir would have a legislature, Ladakh will be a union territory without an Assembly. With the bifurcation in place, the President’s rule imposed in undivided J&K was also removed. However, in Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory, the Central rule will continue for an indefinite period through the Lieutenant Governor.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution, I, Ram Nath Kovind, President of India, hereby revoke the proclamation issued by me under the said Article on 19th December, 2018 in relation to the State of Jammu and Kashmir,” President Ram Nath Kovind said in a statement issued today that revoked the President’s rule in undivided Jammu and Kashmir.
