Jammu: Independence Day terror attack foiled by the security personnel on Sunday with the arrest of a Pulwama resident travelling to Delhi with 8 grenades

Police on Sunday foiled a major terror attack ahead of Independence Day in Jammu and Kashmir. The state police arrested a Kashmiri youth from Jammu who was travelling with eight grenades and Rs 60,000 cash. The youth was arrested in Gandhi Nagar area and was en-route to the national capital.

The police have identified the youth as Arfan Wani and inform that he is a resident of Awantipora in Pulwama district in the valley. The arrest was made based on an intelligence input by security agencies. With security forces and police are on high alert in the wake of Independence Day.

As per the intelligence inputs, there were information that militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen have entered Indian side and are planning to carry multiple attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi on the Independence Day. The arrested youth is being interrogated and the security personnel are trying to figure out his contacts in the national capital.

Providing more details, Dr S D Singh Jamwal, IGP Jammu Zone said, “A Kashmiri youth was arrested in possession of 8 grenades from Jammu’s Gandhi Nagar area, last night. He was carrying the cache of grenades to Delhi to hand them over to someone and they could have been used to disrupt 15th August celebrations in Delhi.”

The Valley is under a lockdown since Monday morning due to the hearing of the petitions of Article 35 A in Supreme Court. The apex court had adjourned the matter for next hearing on August 27. Under the petition, validity of Article 35A was challenged, which empowers J&K state’s legislature to define ‘permanent residents’ of the state and provide special rights to them, reports Times Now.
