India began the world’s largest vaccination drive against coronavirus. The vaccination process will start from January 16 across the country. Doses of Covishield vaccine was flown to 13 cities across India from Pune’s Serum Institute of India’s facility on Tuesday. They were taken to designated national and state-level stores in temperature-controlled trucks to the city’s airport under strict security. The doses were then loaded into private air carriers for distribution all over the country.
The first batch of the SII’s Covishield vaccine has reached Delhi. The consignment of 2.64 lakh doses was brought to the capital by a Spice Jet flight. It was then taken to the storage facility at Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH) amid tight security.
A second consignment left SII for Mumbai in the evening. From the island city, it will be dispatched to 27 places across India.
Serum Institute is supplying 11 million doses of vaccine to India at the cost of Rs.200. CEO Adar Poonawala said that after getting the requisite permission, the vaccine will be made available in the private market at the cost Rs 1,000.
