In what comes across as a case of a Bollywood-esque crime, a 22-year-old man allegedly strangulated his wife to death after accusing her of infidelity and later tried to stage the death as a suicide. The accused was soon nabbed by the Habeeb Nagar police.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as 22-year-old Mohammed Imran, a worker in a furniture store. The couple stayed in a rented house in Subhanpura of Habeeb Nagar and had a love marriage with Shareefa Begum, also aged 22, about two years ago.
“The couple were initially happy but since the last few months, Imran allegedly started harassing her suspecting her fidelity,”said P. Madhukar Swamy, police inspector of Habeeb Nagar.
“The baby had overstayed in the womb and she had delivered a lifeless baby recently at the Niloufer Hospital. After the delivery, the harassment increased from Imran, due to which she often went and stayed with her elder sister in the neighbourhood,” police said.
Imran appeared to be making efforts in the past month to reconcile and moved into a rented two-room house in a cellar, though she was with her sister. On August 6, he called her on the pretext of meeting for lunch in the new house.
“Both had lunch together, after which he picked up a fight with her over the same issue and attacked her. He throttled her with his hands and when she resisted, he banged her head on the wall. He continued to throttle her until she fell unconscious and died,” police said.
He portrayed the entire incident as a suicide and waited till 5 pm with the body in the house apparently brewing up a story. “He went to her sister’s house and informed her that Begum was lying unconscious in the house. He himself hired an auto-rickshaw and took her to the Osmania General Hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. There he claimed that she consumed an unknown poison,” the police added.
Osmania General Hospital officials informed the Habeeb Nagar police that Begum had consumed poison, as per Imran’s statement. The family of the deceased suspected foulplay and alerted the police. On August 13, police strongly suspected Imran’s involvement and arrested him later.
“We had visited the crime scene. Forensic experts who conducted the autopsy said there were impressions on her neck and that an object like a hair clip had pierced into the head. We found hair strands on the wall and a broken hair clip at the crime scene. He confessed to killing her when confronted with such evidence,” officials said. Imran was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
