A massive landslide struck National Highway 5 in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district around Wednesday afternoon. Many people and vehicles were buried under the rubble. Rescue operations were soon lodged. A Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus carrying over 40 passengers are buried under the debris. The HRTC bus was on its way from Reckong Peo to Haridwar via Shimla when it was hit by boulders.
The DC told PTI that 14 bodies have been recovered so far. Thirteen people were rescued with injuries on Wednesday, while several others were still feared buried under the debris. However, the exact number was not known. A Tata Sumo was also located under the debris and eight persons were found dead in it.
The Kinnaur deputy commissioner said that the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local rescue teams have been called in for the rescue work. Sadiq also said shooting stones are still falling which is creating problems in carrying out the rescue operation.
