Jogendra Rana, a history-sheeter who has countless cases in his name was killed in an alleged encounter with the Palghar police on Monday afternoon in Nalasopara.
According to an officer with the Palghar police, the incident occurred in the Radha Nagar area. Constables Manoj Sakpal and Mangesh Chavan, posted with the local crime branch of the Palghar police, were on their way to their Vasai office when they spotted Jogendra Rana.
Rana assaulted the two constables and started to flee from the spot, both the constables chased Rana and after a few minutes of cat and mouse chase, the two constables caught him. In this turmoil Rana stabbed constable Chavan in the stomach with a dagger. He also slashed constable Sakpal on his arm. Chavan then shot one round of bullets on Rana for self-defence with his service weapon.

“The bullet hit Rana on the shoulder and he fell, but he still tried attacking constable Sakpal. Constable Chavan fired once more, hitting Rana on the thigh, before falling to the ground himself,” said the police officer.
Both the constables and Rana were taken to nearby hospitals, Chavan was referred to the civic hospital in Virar, where he was admitted in the ICU. Rana was declared dead upon his arrival by the doctors.
Superintendent of Police (Palghar) Manjunath Singe said, “Chavan is in a critical condition. We are conducting inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the shootout.”
‘Rana had cases like robbery, dacoity and assault registered against him with the Palghar, Bandra, Juhu, Khar and Kandivali police stations, respectively.’ Officer said
Rana is booked for attempt to murder and assaulting a public servant, with an intention to dissuade a public servant from accomplishing his duty under the Indian Penal Code, by the Tulinj police in whose jurisdiction the encounter occurred.
