The Bombay High Court has denied Interim bail to Arnab Goswami. The Republic TV editor was arrested and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. He was charged with abetment to suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother in 2018. Goswami had filed an interim bail plea while terming his arrest “illegal”.
The editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network was initially sent to a quarantine centre in Alibaug. He was later moved to Taloja Central Jail after he was allegedly found using a mobile phone.
A bench of SS Shinde and MS Karnik said Goswami can approach the sessions court at Alibaug in Maharashtra’s Raigad district for regular bail. They added that its observations are prima facie. They also said that the decision will not have any effect on the Sessions Court’s proceedings.
Architect and interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud died by suicide in May 2018. Naik left behind a suicide note, accusing Goswami, Shaikh and Sarda of non-payment of dues amounting to Rs 5.4 crore, a year after Republic TV’s launch.
The Raigad police had closed the case in April 2019. They had said they could not find evidence against the accused named in the suicide note. However, in May this year, Anvay’s daughter approached the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh seeking the case be reopened.
