Bundesliga: Hertha Berlin stun champions Bayern Munich 2-0

Hertha Berlin on Friday clinched an unexpected 2-0 win over league leaders Bayern Munich to end their winning streak in this season. This was their first victory of Bayern Munich in the last nine years.

Hertha skipper Vedad Ibisevic found the opener in the 23rd-minute from the penalty spot sending Bayern custodian Manuel Neuer the other way. The penalty was awarded to Hertha after Jerome Boateng had taken down Salomon Kakou.

Ondrej Duda scored the second of the night for Hertha which is his fifth goal of the season after he scored before half-time. This performance by Hertha took them took them to the second place with 13 points, which is on level with Bayern Munich.

Niko Kovac’s side, without the services of Kingsley Coman, Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso had their first chances before the break.

The numbers justify the fact. They had 65 per cent possession, with 14 corners and 24 shots on goal and despite this, it was surprising how Bayern failed to get even one point from the point.

“Our conversion rate is one reason but we also let in two goals,” Kovac said.

“Both could have been avoided,” he added.

“We still played a decent game. We have no problem with the defeat and will not start seeing everything in a negative light. Everyone who knows this club knows we will bounce back and we will be successful again,” he also said.

James Rodriguez came close to scoring in the second-half as but it couldn’t prevent the defending champions from succumbing to their first defeat this season after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Augsburg.
