In a protest against BJP-led government’s purported attempt to dilute national institutions and scuttle democracy, Patidar reservation agitation leader Hardik Patel and student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar will lead a ‘Save the Constitution’ rally in Mumbai on Sunday.
Notably, the mega rally will start from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Dadar home Rajgruha to his memorial Chaityabhoomi near Shivaji Park. Backed by the Congress-NCP, the rally is being seen as an extension of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s ‘save the constitution’ campaign launched in April.
The massive rally will witness participation from state Youth Congress president Satyajeet Tambe, NCP youth leader Dheeraj Varma, Indian Youth Congress president Keshav Yadav and NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s son Parth Pawar. Several youth organisations are also expected to join the mega rally.
NCP legislator Jitendra Awhad said, “It is a genuine bid to make the youth aware of the danger to our Constitution under the BJP.” He further stated that 10,000 youngsters are expected to join the rally. “They are from all walks of life and from different political parties and youth organisations,” he added.
“There is anger among members over lack of education and employment. The rally will highlight that,” Awhad noted. “A new front called the United Youth Front, which is a combination of youth wings of 14 political parties, is organising the rally,” Satyajeet Tambe asserted.
“The youth are angry and disillusioned with the failures of the BJP government. The upcoming rally will reflect their resentment,” Tambe concluded.
On the 69th Republic Day this year, senior opposition leaders had organised a similar protest. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and leaders like Sharad Yadav, Jignesh Mevani, Sitaram Yechury and others had participated in that rally and accused the ruling government of ‘changing’ the Constitution.
