India’s official entry to the Academy Awards is out of the race. Yes, Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, featuring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh was the official entry in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category for the 92nd Academy Awards. But it is out of the race now. This was revealed after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a shortlist of ten films that will proceed to the next round of voting.
The Oscars shortlists are The Painted Bird (Czech Republic), Truth and Justice (Estonia), Les Misérables (France), Those Who Remained (Hungary), Honeyland (North Macedonia), Corpus Christi (Poland), Beanpole (Russia), Atlantics (Senegal), Parasite (South Korea) and Pain and Glory (Spain). It is worth mentioning that 91 films were competing for the big honour.
Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, is inspired by the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy. They defied the odds to realize their dreams and went on to win the hearts of fans.
The movie was much loved by critics and fans alike and songs such as Apna Time Aayega and Azadi, in particular, became the rage. Apna Time Aayega, in fact, became a national slogan.
To date, no Indian film has ever won an Oscar. Mother India (1958), Salaam Bombay (1989) and Lagaan (2001) are the only three Indian films which made it to the top five.
On the work front, Ranveer Singh will soon be seen in Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83. he will be seen as legendary cricketer Kapil Dev. Deepika Padukone too is a part of the movie. She is playing Romi, Kapil Dev aka Ranveer’s onscreen wife.
