Google on Tuesday paid tributes to iconic Indian actress and stage artist Zohra Sehgal. Zohra Sehgal has been one of the first Indian actresses to get global recognition for her work. The special doodle that showcased the actress in a graceful dancing pose was made by Google visitor artist Parvati Pillai.

In a note written on its website, Google described Sehgal as “one of the country’s first female actors to truly achieve recognition on the international stage.” Zohra’s film ‘Neecha Nagar’ was released today in 1946 at the Cannes Movie Competition. Indian cinema’s first {international} essential success, ‘Neecha Nagar’ received the pageant’s highest honor: the Palme d’Or prize.
Born on April 27, 1912, in Saharanpur, UP Zohra began as a dancer in choreographer Uday Shankar’s troupe. From 1935 to 1943, she was the number one dancer with the troupe.
She appeared in many Bollywood films as well as in English language films besides television series and plays.
Often called the grand old lady of Bollywood, she last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, Cheeni Kum, Dil Se, Veer Zaara, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Bend It Like Beckham. She also featured in British Television shows like Doctor Who, The Jewel in the Crown after she moved to London, England in 1962
The talented actress and dancer died in New Delhi on 10 July 2014 due to cardiac arrest.
Zohra Sehgal is a recipient of Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001 & Padma Vibhushan in 2010 amongst different awards.
