Ghulam Nabi Azad, Saifuddin Soz to face sedition charges for comments on Indian Army

Advocate Shashi Bhushan had sought action against the Congress leaders for offences under IPC sections 124, 120B and 505 (1).

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz are in trouble now for their remarks on Indian Army. Advocate Shashi Bhushan has lodged a sedition complaint in New Delhi’s Patiala House Court against the duo for their comments in a TV interview on June 22, in which Azad had said, that ‘Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir was killing more civilians than terrorists during military operations in the state’, reports PTI.

According to the complaint, Bhushan had sought action against the Congress leaders for offences under IPC sections 124 (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 505 (1) (spreading rumour about army/navy/air force official which is likely to cause mutiny). The advocate had claimed that the alleged comments not only defame the Indian Army, but show them as killers of innocent people and are like ‘nothing less than waging war against the country’.

A union minister in the UPA-I government, Soz had commented earlier that former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s assessment over a decade ago was ‘correct even today’ about Kashmir and Kashmiris who will ‘prefer to be independent’ if given a chance to ‘exercise their free will’. In his recent book, ‘Kashmir: Glimpses of History and the Story of Struggle’, the senior leader from Kashmir had argued that before trying to discuss issues of Kashmir with the mainstream parties, the Union government should sit with Hurriyat Conference for a open dialogue.
