According to the rumours, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir will be contesting in upcoming Lok Sabha elections. It is to be noted that the Lok Sabha elections 2019 will be held in 7 phases from 11 April 2019 to 19 May 2019. And, as soon as the election schedules were declared, every political party is gearing up. Several political parties are trying to get on-board popular faces including Gautam Gambhir to win the election.
And, if the rumours are to be believed than Gautam Gambhir will be contesting for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate. The 37 year old former cricketer will contest from New Delhi, where currently, Meenakshi Lekhi is Member of Parliament (MP).
In a recent interview, when Gautam Gambhir was asked about contesting polls, the former cricketer said he never thought on that. However, he had further said, “If ever there is a situation in life that i get into that space, don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the cricketer. Don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the human either. Vote for Gautam Gambhir if you believe in him, that he can change your life for better, and can try to make this country a better place to live in.”
In December 2018, Gautam Gambhir announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He was awarded the Padma Shri recently. He has always been very clear and loud with his political opinions.
Former cricketers like Mohammed Kaif, Mohammed Azharuddin, Kirti Azad and Navjot Singh Sidhu have already joined politics.
