Manchester City overcame their first league defeat this season with a thumping 3-1 victory against Everton at home on Saturday.
Striker Gabriel Jesus scored a brace while Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Everton four minutes before Raheem Sterling sealed the victory with a cheeky header past Jordan Pickford in the 69th minute.
The victory helped City climb back into top of the point standings with 44 from 17 games, two clear of the second-placed Liverpool, who are due to hold Manchester United at Anfield tomorrow.
Everton remained on seventh and after their fifth defeat in 17 matches, are on 24 points.
City started well and created plenty of opportunities before Jesus put them ahead in the 22nd minute. A loose pass in the Everton midfield allowed Ikay Gundagon to find Leroy Sane on the last channel. The German then released the Brazilian through for him to put the ball behind an advancing Pickford.
It was the Jesus-Sane combination again that fetched City their second goal. The German’s pinpoint cross from the left was guided into the net by Jesus in the 50th minute.
The brace was a relief for the 21-year-old, who most recently had come under the pump for his wayward shots and lack of form.
Calvert-Lewin pulled Everton back into the contest when he rose above Fabian Delph to meet Lucas Digne’s looping cross and head into the top corner. The game was back into the contest with Everton looking dangerous on the counter.
But substitute Sterling – in for Sane – sealed the victory with a thumping header from Fernandinho’s cross after sneaking in between the Everton centre-backs.
