Former US president George HW Bush, who steered the nation through the turbulent period in global nations that included the cold war and the breakup of the Soviet Nation, has died at the age of 94, the family announced via statement late on Friday.
Bush, the 41st president of the United States and father to the 43rd, died shortly after 10 pm on Friday night, said a report from news agency AP. His wife Barbara Bush has passed away eight months ago earlier this year.
He served in office between 1989 and 1993 and then eight years later saw his son become the 43rd President of US.
Succeeding Ronald Reagan, a rival from whom he had also served as the vice-president, Bush entered office with a vast amount of experience. He had been a navy pilot, a World War II hero, Texas congressman, CIA director, United Nations delegate and an envoy to Beijing.
But it was during his tenure – that began on January 20, 1989 – as the Commander in Chief of America that brought the best out of the former president. The US remained the world’s only remaining superpower during Bush’s tenure – a period that witnessed the Berlin wall fall; the Soviet Union break, the collapse of the communist bloc in Eastern Europe and the ending of a long-lasting cold war globally.
John Adams was the only other President whose dynasty had another president to the nation (John Quincy Adams, 6th president).
Earlier, Bush was admitted to the hospital following his wife’s funeral in April and was again brought to the hospital this Sunday after complaining of fatigue.
The former US President had also been admitted earlier in 2015, after fracturing a neck bone following a fall at the family’s summer residence in Kennebunkport, Maine. Three years prior to the incident, He had to visit a hospital in Texas after facing difficulty in breathing.
