Every community has right to its own rules: Hamid Ansari on Sharia courts
Former Vice-president Hamid Ansari on Thursday backed the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) scheme, in which every district will have a Sharia court. Ansari said that “each community has a right to practice its own personal law.”
“People are confusing social practices with legal system. Our law recognizes that each community can have own rules. Personal law in India covers- marriage, divorce, adoption & inheritance. Each community has a right to practice its own personal law,” said Ansari as reported by ANI.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had earlier spoken of its plans to open Darul-Qaza (Sharia courts) to resolve issues in line with Islamic laws. However, the proposal was opposed by the government.
The former Vice-president also spoke about how WhatsApp rumours have given Away to on lynching incidents and said nobody has the right to take law into their own hands.
“I think public reaction says it all. Nobody has the right to take a law in their own hands. There is a law in this country,” he added.

Asked on whether he would like to join twitter, Ansari was stern in his reply and said although he is very well in terms with the technology in the 20th century, he has no wishes to join twitter.
“I have no intentions of joining Twitter. In terms of technology, I am still in the 20th century. I have a computer & books, I am very happy with that,” said the former Vice-president.
Meanwhile he was in full support of Shashi Tharoor, who was recently criticised for his ‘Hindu Pakistan’ remark.
“I have not read what he (Tharoor) has said. But he is an educated man, a writer, an MP…and heads Parliament’s committee on external affairs. Whatever he says, he will say after thorough consideration,” Ansari said to PTI.
