A goal drought that began since August 18 when he scored against Arsenal, was ended by the Spanish forward as he pulled off a calm finish in the 70th minute to give his side the lead after he had squandered a good opportunity in the first half of the match.
Chelsea could have had a second but English midfielder Ross Barkley’s header hit the bar. On the other side of the pitch, it was Kepa Arrizabalaga who added weight to his status as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after he pulled off a fine save to help Chelsea maintain a clean sheet and most importantly, stop Vidi from levelling the score.
“If after a goal he wants to cry, I hope to see him cry very often,” said Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri of Morata, who found the net for just the second time in 10 matches this season.
“It’s very important for him to score. I think it’s very important for him to play a very good match. He played a very good match,” added Sarri, as quoted by AFP.
The Blues are now on top of Group A with six points after winning both their matches.
