Mauro Sarri’s record unbeaten start as Chelsea manager came to an abrupt halt as a rampant Tottenham Hotspur ran wild to climb to third in the Premier League table. Tottenham won 3-0 to record their first ever consecutive victories in the North London derby.
Goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane put Spurs two goals ahead inside the opening 16 minutes before Son Heung-Min sent the home crowd into raptures with a stunning solo effort in the 54th minute.
Coming on the back of a home defeat to Man City, Tottenham looked to have a long night against an unbeaten Chelsea team. But their high-pressing football left everyone stunned with Chelsea looking bereaved of any ideas.
EPL: Liverpool, Manchester City record big wins; United held
With 30 points after 13 games, Tottenham has had their best start to a Premier League season since 2011-12, when they had one more point at that stage. It was Spurs’ best performance this season, while Chelsea endured their worst under Sarri.
Instead, it was their custodian Kepa Arrizabalaga, who saved Chelsea the blushes. Kepa made as many as six stops including a sharp reflex to deny Toby Alderweireld’s effort from a corner, while Kane and Alli were guilty of squandering easy chances from close range. South Korea’s Son also had great chances to score in the first half but while he struck straight at Kepa from the first, the second was brilliantly parried away by the Spaniard goalkeeper.
The defeat also meant that despite having a great season, Chelsea has won just two of their past six matches, which includes the draws against Liverpool and Manchester United and now the defeat against Spurs.
Olivier Giroud headed in a consolation goal to reduce the deficit in the 85th minute but there was never any doubt that Spurs were the deserved winners.
