Divock Origi scored his first club goal in over a year as Liverpool snatched a dramatic late win against Everton in the English Premier League derby day on Sunday.
The game seemed destined for a draw after both sides squandered several opportunities across both the halves but a stoppage-time error from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford allowed Origi to grab a sensational victory for the Reds in the season’s first Merseyside derby that kept them just two points off table leaders Manchester City.
With seconds left for the whistle, Pickford failed to clear a Virgil Van Dijk’s shot from the edge of the penalty box. His fumble allowed Origi to tap-in from close range for his first Liverpool goal since May 2017.
Everton failed to grab an opportunity to extend the gap below and after another defeat at Anfield – they are still searching for their first victory since 1999 – the Toffees remained on sixth with 22 points from 14 matches.
Both sides started well and should have scored one each inside five minutes but Everton’s Yerry Mina failed to place his free header on target, while Sadio Mane of Liverpool skied his half-volley after a clever Mohamed Salah flick had sent the Senegalese through on goal.
Brazilian Richarlison then breezed past the Liverpool defence with a surging run but failed to take a shot stumbling on his way as another chance went begging. Everton enjoyed more of the ball and were creating opportunities in plenty but failed to make of it.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson then denied Andre Gomes in the second half with a brilliant save as the home side slowly made their way back into the game.
But until Origi slotted the ball home in the 96th minute none of the sides seemed to know how to score. Van Dijk’s mis-hit looked to be travelling above the bar, but Pickford fumbled to collect the ball and spilled back into play with Belgian Origi tapping the ball into the net to win the game for Liverpool.
