3.7 Magnitude Earthquake struck Haryana’s Jhajjar at 10.36 pm on Monday. The epicentre, 5 km deep, is traced to a spot 10 km north of Jhajjar. The Medium-intensity earthquake’s tremors were felt in Delhi and NCR areas on Monday night. Frightened residents rushed out of their homes as soon as they felt the tremors. Tremors were also felt in parts of Gurugram at around 10:40 pm.
“Earthquake of Magnitude:3.7, Occurred on 05-07-2021, 22:36:54 IST, Lat: 28.70 & Long: 76.65, Depth: 5 Km , Location: 10km N of Jhajjar, Haryana,” the National Centre of Seismology tweeted.
This is not the first earthquake to strike the NCR and its surrounding region. It has been witnessing minor and small magnitude earthquakes from April to August 2020. The epicentres of these earthquakes were located in areas of northeast Delhi, Rohtak, Sonipat, Baghpat, Faridabad and Alwar.
Delhi, which lies close to a faultline, is susceptible to big earthquakes. The city falls in seismic zone IV – a very high-risk zone. India is divided into four seismic zones — II, III, IV and V.
Ever since the increasing seismic activity in the region. The National Centre of Seismology has deployed additional earthquake recording instruments for close monitoring of seismic activity in and around Delhi. As if a magnitude 6 earthquake strikes Delhi and surrounding areas it will cause major destructions.
