The five-time Grammy-winning singer Dionne Warwick has grabbed the headlines for her recent comment on singer Beyonce. During a video interview with Essence, the 78-year-old said that she has an admiration for Beyonce but she has not yet reached the icon status. “Watching her grow has been quite refreshing. It’s wonderful to see how she’s been able to create what and who she wanted to be and who she is,” said Dionne.
She further said, “I love her to death and can appreciate her talent. But that iconic status that I just mentioned before? Those names? (she took the names of Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr). It’s a long road.”
Talking about the new generation, she said, “I don’t know if 10 years from now, anybody can actually sing the songs of our babies today. That’s not, as you guys say, ‘throwing shade.’ That’s just looking at it with reality. The youngsters are doing it.”
Dionne Warwick earned two number 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She won Grammys for songs like I’ll Never Love This Way Again (year 1970-79), Deja Vu, Do You Know The Way To San Jose?, and That’s What Friends Are For.
