Delhi High Court grants bail to pregnant Safoora Zargar in Delhi Riot case

The incarceration of student-activist Safoora Zargar has been in the headlines ever since she was arrested on April 10. Today the Delhi High Court has granted bail to the Jamia Coordination Committee member Safoora Zargar. She was under custody for alleged involvement in Delhi riots that took place earlier this year.

The order was passed by a Single Judge Bench of Justice Rajiv Shakhder on Humanitarian ground via video conferencing. Zargar, an M Phil student of Jamia Millia Islamia, is 23 weeks pregnant. Safoora was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of the like amount.

The Court has imposed the following conditions for bail:

*  Zargar will not indulge in any activity for which she is being investigated which may infract the law.

* She will refrain from influencing witnesses.

* Safoora will not hamper the investigation.

* Also she will not leave the National Capital region without seeking permission of the court concerned.

* Zargar has to be in touch with the investigating officer through mobile phone once every 15 days.

This was the fourth time that Zargars lawyers were moving the court for bail ever since she was arrested on April 10. The first time was on April 18, the second time it was on April 21 once again the plea was rejected. Then again on May 2, and on June 4.

Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24. The violence was between citizenship law supporters and protesters. It soon spiralled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and scores injured.
