India is staring at a coal crisis and Delhi is bracing for power cuts. Tata Power arm operating in Delhi has sent phone messages to its customers to use electricity judiciously. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to drop a hint.
He wrote, “Delhi could face a power crisis. I am personally keeping a close watch over the situation. We are trying our best to avoid it. In the meanwhile, I wrote a letter to Hon’ble PM seeking his personal intervention.”

Not only Delhi but also Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are also affected by the coal crisis. Some states have witnessed a power cut, some are currently facing a blackout, while others are expected to in the coming days.
Earlier last week, Power Minister R K Singh had admitted to the coal shortage at thermal power plants in the country. However, he had also said that the power demand would be moderated in the second half of October and coal supplies will also improve at plants.
There are 135 power plants in India that run on coal. Out of these, reportedly, 107 power plants have coal reserves for the next five days or less.
