‘The Daily Show’ host Trevor Noah mocks India over amount spent on ‘Statue of Unity’
Ever since the ‘Statue of Unity’ was unveiled by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has been in the news as the world’s tallest statue. But more than a few people were baffled by the amount of money spent on the statue, including the host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah.
Trevor Noah talked about the statue during a segment, mocking the fact that the ‘Statue of Unity’ cost around Rs 2,989 crore. He went on to reason why a statue of Mahatma Gandhi would have been a better idea. “What are you doing India?” he asked.
This comes days after British parliamentarian Peter Bone called termed ‘Statue of Unity’ a total nonsense as Britain donated more than £1billion to India in the years for country’s development.
Condemning the blatant use of British taxpayer’s money — as foreign aid — by the Indian government, Tory MP Peter Bone was of the opinion that Britain should not contribute to India which believes in making statues than using the aid for women’s rights, funding solar panels and investment in low-carbon transport.
The Statue of Unity was unveiled on 31st Oct 2018 by PM Modi on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Statue of Unity is built as a tribute to the ‘Iron Man of India’.
It is to be noted that Trevor Noah is a comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and television host. He is known for hosting The Daily Show, an American satirical news program on Comedy Central.
