After Tauktee, we now have Cyclone Yaas all set to wreak havoc on India’s coastline in ten days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the cyclone is all set to intensify into a ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ in the next 24 hours. They also issued a rainfall warning for West Bengal and Odisha.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a meeting via video conference with the chief ministers of Odisha Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to review preparations in view of Cyclone Yaas.
The IMD added Yaas is likely to make landfall on May 26 evening between Paradip in Odisha and Sagar islands in West Bengal. It will soon intensify into a severe cyclonic storm’ with wind speed ranging from 155kmph to 165 kmph, gusting to 185 kmph.
NDRF DG SN Pradhan Monday said the agency has committed 99 teams across Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in view of cyclone Yaas. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea. The state has ordered the evacuation of people from low-lying areas.
