Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for Cyclone Nivar. It has intensified into a “severe cyclonic storm”. Nivar is likely to have a sustained wind speed of 120 to 130 kilometres (75-81 miles) per hour. It will cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Wednesday midnight and early hours of Nov. 26, The India Meteorological Department added that the wind speed may even rise to as much as 145 kilometres.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry both have declared a public holiday and asked people not to venture out of their home.
The water from the Chembarambakkam Lake in Chengalpattu District has been released into the River Adyar. The people living in low lying areas have been asked to move to the relief camps.
According to official sources, relief and rehabilitation camps were arranged. The people from vulnerable areas have been shifted to safer places. Rescue teams including NDRF personnel and trained Fire service and IRBN police personnel are alert. Some round the clock functioning control rooms set up.
The high-speed winds along with heavy rains can spread widespread damage. Bus services and trains services too have been cancelled in Tamil Nadu. Flights have been cancelled due to the severe cyclone.
Not only Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Karnataka will also receive heavy rainfall.
