Cyclone Nivar hurtled into the Puducherry coast late on Wednesday night, uprooting trees and packing strong winds and rains as tens of thousands of people took refuge in shelters. Cyclone Nivar made landfall at around 2.30 am with winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour. Waterlogging was witnessed in parts of Chennai city following overnight rainfall due to the storm.
Authorities suspended power supply across several cities to prevent damage to the electricity grid. Chennai airport remained shut till 9 am but has now resumed operations.
The super cyclone weakened into a severe cyclonic storm after it crossed the coast near Puducherry. IMD Chennai has said that isolated heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. A yellow alert for Wednesday and Thursday has been sounded for Bengaluru by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
