Cyclone Burevi: IMD Issues Warning for Cyclonic Storm in Kerala

The Southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala have recently faced the brunt of super cyclone Nivar. The IMD has now issued a new warning about a cyclone to Kerala and Tamil Nadu once again. A depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal and it will be bringing heavy rainfall in these states.

Pre-Cyclone Watch for South Tamil Nadu and South Kerala coasts. The Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestward at 2330 hrs of 30th Nov 2020 about 590kms ESE of Trincomalee(SL). To intensify further into a Deep Depression and subsequently into a Cyclonic Storm,” India Meteorological Department (IMD) said earlier today.

IMD said, Rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep from December 1 to 4. In south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places and extremely heavy showers at isolated places on December 3.

A ‘red alert’ has been issued in Kerala’s southern districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, and ‘orange alert’ in Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts till Thursday owing to predictions of inclement weather conditions.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has requested the Navy, Coast Guard and India Air Force to prepare ships and helicopters for rescue operations.
