On Saturday, India witnessed its largest jump in the number of coronavirus cases, India has now overtaken Italy to become the sixth worst affected country. Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh observed the biggest spike in daily COVID-19 count on Friday.
As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s latest data, the total number of positive cases in the country has reached 236,657, while the death toll mounted to 6,642. America’s Johns Hopkins University confirmed around midnight that India had 235,769 Covid-19 cases and Italy 236,184. India is now ranked the 12th worst-hit country.
Just a week ago, India surpassed China- where the virus emerged late last year in December and climbed to the ninth spot.
On May 30, 2020, the government extended the nationwide lockdown to June 30, 2020, through an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs with new guidelines, which allows malls, hotels, restaurants, and places of worship to open from June 8, 2020, except in containment zones. However, all the establishments that come under containment zones, will continue to remain closed.
