The BMC late on Sunday night sealed the Koliwada and Janata Colony areas in Worli, Mumbai and declared them a ‘contaminated zone’ after four residents tested positive for coronavirus. The four men belong to different families and do not have any travel history to a Coronavirus-hit region. Officials confirmed that all four victims are above 50 years of age.
Aditya Thackeray, minister of tourism and environment and MLA from Worli constituency, quoted a BMC tweet announcing the complete lockdown of Worli Koliwada. “Late last night, 2 am onwards, Koliwada and Janta Colony have been sealed off further. Disinfection and fumigation are on along with contact tracing,” the tweet read.
Worli. Koliwada and Janata Colony are congested localities, where residents live cheek by jowl. The threat of contamination gets exacerbated. The BMC along with Mumbai Police has locked down the entire area and did not allow residents to move out of their homes. People from outside the locality were also barred from venturing inside.
Policemen deployed in the area have been using a public address system to make announcements and allay concerns. The entire area will be disinfected and fumigated by the BMC.
In R (North) ward, a building in Shailendra Nagar and a housing society in Ambewadi, both in Dahisar, were sealed on Monday, after two residents tested positive in the former and one in the latter. None of the three has any travel history to affected countries or contact with a coronavirus infected person.
The BMC will make available a map of Mumbai that will indicate the spots with a large number of positive cases. The decision was made on Monday during a meeting presided over by the civic chief. This will help people to identify high-risk zones.
