COVID-19: Kerala Announces Complete Lockdown From May 8 to May 16

India on Thursday recorded maximum fresh cases and fatalities in a day with 4,12,262 new infections and 3,980 deaths in the last 24 hours. To combat the surge Kerala has announced a complete lockdown in the state from May 8 till May 16. The decision was taken after the state reported the highest single-day spike of nearly 42,000 infections.

The news was confirmed by Kerala CM’s with a tweet that said, “The entire State of Kerala will be under lockdown from 6 am on 8 May to 16 May. This is in the background of a strong 2nd wave of #COVID19.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the situation in Kerala as serious. He added that stringent measures will have to be taken to curb the Covid surge. The CM also said that instructions will be given to strengthening the ward-level committees.

The State is going through a very serious situation and COVID is spreading rapidly. All figures are increasing and the test positivity rate is not reducing either.In these circumstances, we need to strengthen the restrictions,” Vijayan said.

He said in view of the rise in the cases, more stringent measures will have to be taken to curb the surge in the state.

The state government on Wednesday had decided to strengthen the anti-COVID measures. It is by deploying medical students and government officials to tackle the situation on the ground.
