Coronavirus India: COVID-19 cases surge past 78,000; death toll at 2,549

On the fifty-first day of India’s nationwide lockdown to curb the COVID-19, the cases in the nation have jumped by 3,722 in the past 24 hours. Increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 78,003. The death toll has risen to 2,549 after 134 deaths in the last 24 hours. These are the latest figures as per the Health Ministry.

The total active coronavirus cases in the country were at 49,219 while 26,234 have been cured of the virus. The health ministry says 70% of deaths have occurred due to co-morbidities.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 25,922. It is followed by Gujarat at 9,267, Tamil Nadu at 9,227, Delhi at 7,998, Rajasthan at 4,328, Madhya Pradesh at 4,173 and Uttar Pradesh at 3,729. The number of Covid-19 cases has gone up to 2,290 in West Bengal, 2,137 in Andhra Pradesh, and 1,924 in Punjab. It has risen to 1,367 in Telangana, 971 in Jammu and Kashmir, 959 in Karnataka, 940 in Bihar, and 793 in Haryana.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Coronavirus may never go away. Populations around the world will have to learn to live with it.

Michael Ryan, director WHO health emergency program, said that the coronavirus may become another endemic virus and may never go away. Like HIV the novel coronavirus may be here to stay. Without a vaccine, it could take years for the population to build up sufficient levels of immunity to it.

The novel coronavirus has infected over 43 lakh people worldwide and led to more than 2,90,000 deaths.
