The 40-year-old philanthropist and former equestrian is the daughter of Edgar Bronfman, the late Canadian chairman of the liquor giant Seagram whose net-worth is estimated at USD 2.6 billion. Clare will face a sentence of 25 years.
AS reported by Deccan Chronicle, Bronfman was accused of using her wealth to fund Nxivm to the tune of more than USD 100 million. She was a member of the group, which shot to notoriety for its initiation rites such as branding of its members with the founder’s initials.
Besides Raniere, the five other people accused in the case have now all pleaded guilty. Allison Mack, an actress in the ‘Smallville’ television series, has also pleaded guilty to racketeering and recruiting women who were forced to have sex with its leader.
The Seagram heiress pleaded guilty of her role in the secretive society of women sex slaves. She now faces 25 years in prison but the sentencing will see her incarcerated for just 27 months. Her sentencing hearing will next be on July 25.
Keith Raniere, 58, the founder of the purported self-help group Nxivm who has already been charged with sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy. She was arrested in Mexico last year and has been accused of creating a secret society called DOS. It has more than a dozen women slaves and a sole man on top. She now stands alone as a defendant in the case.
HBO has plans to make a documentary series on the court case.
