Punjab Gets First Dalit Chief Minister In Charanjt Singh Channi
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced 58-year-old Charanjit Singh Channi as 16th Chief Minister of Punjab. Charanjit is a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib constituency. His swearing-in ceremony took place held in Chandigarh. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu attended the ceremony. But Punjab’s ex-chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh skipped the event.
Channi became the first individual from the Dalit community to take charge of the top post. The 58-year-old leader was administered the oath of office by governor Banwarilal Purohit. The simple ceremony was held in the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh. Charanjit Singh Channi took the oath in Punjabi. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni have taken oath as the Punjab Deputy Chief Ministers.

Charanjit Singh Channi was born in Punjab’s Bhajauli village near Kurali in 1963. His family was settled in Malaysia where his father worked. But the family returned to India in 1955. They settled in the Kharar town of SAS Nagar district of Punjab.
Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned from the CM’s post on Saturday. It was after a months-long power-sharing tussle with Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.
