105-year-old Man Kaur, the springer is known for making India proud at International Athletics Championships. She won multiple gold medals. The centenarian springer breathed her last on Sunday i.e. August 1, the cause of her demise is heart attack. According to the reports, she was undergoing a treatment for cancer.
Gurdev Singh, Man Kaur’s elder son informed PTI, “She suffered a heart attack. She was doing fine but we do not know what suddenly happened.” She is survived by two of her sons and a daughter. She was admitted to Ayurvedic hospital in Derabassi in Mohali for not keeping well for a few months now. The doctors had reportedly suggested to not include the chemotherapy because of her age. Thus her family moved her from the PGI hospital to a private hospital.
Man Kaur had bagged her first medal in 2007 at the Chandigarh Masters Athletics meet, wherein she ran “for the heck of it” after seeing her eldest son Gurdev take part in a race in Patiala. She started running at the ripe age of 93 and became an inspiration for many.
Man Kaur’s prominent achievements include:
- 2011- Two gold medals in Sacramento
- 2012- Gold medal for a 100m sprint in Asian Masters Athletics Championship in Taiwan
- 2013- Five gold medals in the Canadian Masters Athletics meet
- 2016- Four gold medals from American Master Games
- 2017- Gold medal for 100m sprint at the World Master Games in Auckland
- 2018- Gold for 100m and 200m at World Master meet in Spain
- 2019- Four medals at World Masters Athletics Championship in Torun, Poland
