This stunning loss is sure to ring bells in the team and the management after the team was held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Wolves at home in the Premier League, days ago.

As many as nine changes were made to the Manchester United line-up by Mourinho and by the end of the night, it turned out to be not that wise a decision.

Both teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of extra time and the match went in favour of the Rams in the penalties, where Frank Lampard’s side edged past the Premier League giants 8-7, following a Phil Jones missed opportunity.

The penalties come, somebody has to miss. I knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones,” Mourinho reacted after the loss.

Juan Mata came up with the opener for Manchester United as early as in the third minute after receiving an assist from midfielder Jesse Lingard.

But Derby bounced back courtesy a stunning free-kick which left United custodian Sergio Romero stranded in shock.

Romero was then sent off after he tried to handle the ball outside the area. With a man down, United would always be under pressure to come out on top and this development was well utilised by Lampard’s side as Jack Mariott headed one into the net in the 85th minute, giving Derby the lead.

But Marouane Fellaini saved Mourinho the blushes, equalising for the Red Devils in the stoppage time before the game finally headed into the penalties.

Both sides were inseparable in the shootout but a failed effort from Jones was enough to send Lampard’s side into the next round as Manchester United crashed out, much against the expectations.
